6 Month old needs glasses fro extreme farsightedness 2008/06/24 15:24 Karma: 0
hi,
my son was born 2 months premature and is 6 months old 4 months corrected. as with all preemies he has a lot of doc appt. well this morning at his eye exam the doc said he was very very farsighted and if he doesn't wear glasses he will stop using one of his eyes and it will turn inward. So I bought some glasses. we have to wait a few days to get them but I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with this. ohh and his eye problem isn't caused from his prematurity it is genetic. he is adopted and I don't really have much info on his birth parents so I don't know what the severity of it will be. they said that as he gets older his eye site should improve from +7 to +2 or +3. Other than the farsightedness his eyes are great. Any advice would be great.

Hey there,

My advice is that you make sure that you get glasses that fit well and are comfortable for your baby...I bet that he will take to them quickly, especially being so young. My daughter has had glasses since she was 3 months old and she is 21 months now...her prescription has dropped from +13.5 to +9.5 in that time...all due to growth.

My other piece of advice is to expect comments from strangers about your sons glasses...people mean well but often what comes out of there mouths can be hurtful to a new proud mother. I survived the many "I didn't know they made glasses that small" comments by simply saying "It is such a blessing that they do"...and it really is a blessing!

Good luck ~ Cheryl

Hi my 7month old (almost 8) was also diaganosed with being very farsighted. he just got his glasses a few days ago (6/25)..his perscripton is sph +5.50 cyl +1.25 axis 90 for both eyes. we took him to see the eye doctor becuase it seemed to have a bit of a cross eye. turns out it was like that because of the hyperopia and he also has a flat bridge to his nose right now. I was all readdy for the doctor to tell me there were excersises to help wih my son's eyes...so i was shocked when he said he needed glasses. i'm still affraid tha they will get in the way of his eyes growing and developing. one of you mentioned your child's eyes getting beter with growth and that thier pescription lowered from a +7.....did that happen even when your child wore glasses all the time?? or did you not have your child wear the glasses every waking hour so they would develope?? sorry for the rambling...as you can tell i'm also nervous and concerned about my baby's eyes too.

Thanks
Laura (1st time mom)

Laura,

My daughter has had her prescription drop from a +13.5 to a +9.5...this improvement happened from the time she was 3 months old until now (21 months old). The improvement is due to growth HOWEVER she still needs to wear her glasses all of the time (and she always will). She also developed crossed eyes after her first birthday and has had 2 surgeries so far to correct that problem...her far sightedness is so extreme that it is hard for her eyes to work together, even when corrected with glasses.

Believe me, your daughter is going to benefit greatly from wearing her glasses all of the time...the prescription improvement happens because there is physical growth and after wearing his glasses for awhile, when he is able to, he will ask to have glasses...it is one of the first things my daughter says in the morning and after a nap.

As with anything though, every child is different. I am sure your doctor would be happy to reassure you.

Good luck,
Cheryl

my son's eyes are at +7.5 for both and that is the way they have been. the doc said that they would get better and he will probably always need to wear glasses. he doesn't mess with them at all and actually seems to want to wear them. he is much happier when wearing them. he wears them when awake all the time. we only take them off to sleep. so far i have no complaints. the doc said that if he started messing with them alot to bring him in because that means he probably needs a new prescription. so far we have no eyes turning but the doc said we probably caught it in time and he probably wont need any further intervention.
