I found out my daughter had accommodative esoptropia at 26 months. She is severely farsighted and her first prescription was +7.25. Needless to say I was devastated to learn that my beautiful baby needed glasses, and would need them for the rest of her life. I cried the first day. Looking back, I know I was in denial and put off the glasses. I took my time getting them, and I took my time getting her to wear them. I spent a lot of time researching lenses and made it a priority to buy the best on the market for her. Technology is so incredible now, than when we were kids and people wore those "coke Bottle" glasses.

I now know that it is important to get your children into their glasses as soon as possible if they need them. My Dr tells me that it was great that I caught her vision problem early and got her into glasses relatively early. She didn't develop amblyopia and vision in both eyes are working equally well, so we don't need patching. The glasses are doing their job. Her prescription actually improved ever so slightly to +7.0. I'm sure with age, her farsightedness will continue to decrease, but she will always need glasses. So many people are getting Lasik these days, who knows what the technology will be in 20 years when she qualifies for it. There is always an option for contacts too in her teens. For now, we all love her cute Barbie metal framed glasses. More importantly, she loves them.

Hi I just found out this week that my daughter who is 2 and a half needs glasses. I was the same totally devastated. I had noticed her eyes sometimes looked like they were turning in more so when watching tv or she was tired. Had spoke to optician who sd this was normal for her age but to get her checked anyway. wasnt expecting her to need glasses so was shocked. She gets them next week but is to see a specialist. Is this normal? Think I was in so much shock that I didnt ask anything. On the prescription it says + 2.5. Being new to this I havent a clue what this means. She is to wear them all the time but can take them off outside. Am hoping to speak to optician when go to collect glasses. Hopefully to put mind at rest. Dont know how I will get her to keep thom on or how i will keep her wee sister (one and a half)away from them.

The +2.5 is the prescription strength of her glasses. Being positive means that she's farsighted (or hyperopic), and the higher the number is, the worse the problem. As a comparison, my daughter's prescription is +7.

Keeping the glasses on can be tough. It'll be a process of getting your daughter used to the glasses, don't expect her to wear them all the time right away. It took us 2 weeks before our daughter would leave them on. Keep positive about wearing the glasses, and don't be afraid to visit the eyeglasses store a lot to keep them adjusted to her face. It seems like we're there nearly every week because the frames can get bent relatively quickly, plus our kids are growing quickly. Good luck and let me know if you have more questions.

My nearly-12-month-old has now had glasses for a week and a half and she is doing REALLY well with them. She fought us originally at the eyeglasses store, but since then she doesn't mess with them at all except for taking them off in the car -- and that may be more an issue of boredom and wanted something to chew on than because they bother her. I'm so thankful to God for it being this easy. I was preparing for 24/7 supervision, and she's just doing fantastic. So don't be discouraged! And don't hesitate to pray!

Hi - I was in your shoes 6 months ago - 2.5yo daughter with turning watching TV or tired. She also was prescribed +2.5 ... I cried and cried. BUT, she looks even more beautiful with her specs. I found a retainer that is barely noticeable to keep them on and positioned correctly. See website www.inconspecuous.com.au. It will keep them safe if her little sister should grab at them too. I have a 19month old too so i understand those fears. I hope your daughter accepts her spectacles as well as my Mia did. Everyone comments on how cute she looks. GOOD LUCK, you're not alone! Megan
