Did your baby become more active after glasses? 2010/01/22 16:13 Karma: 0
Greetings!

I'm so happy to have found this site. My daughter is 8 months old with strabismus and is +6 in both eyes. Currently we are patching for 2 hours each day, alternating eyes. I expect she'll be prescribed glasses when we meet with the opthamologist next month.

My Sophia shows no signs of mobility yet. Everyone tells me to enjoy this time while it lasts but I do get sad when I see younger babies rolling, cruising, sitting, grabbing at toys, and generally exploring the world around them. I feel like Sophia is missing out on so much because her world is blurry.

When babies do get their glasses, is it like a fog has lifted and they start becoming more active? How long did it take for your baby to "learn" to see?

I would greatly appreciate any insights and advice. Thank you.

Hi XeeBoo!
I am so sorry Sophia is having trouble with her eyes. My son, Zac is 14 months and just got his new glasses for far sightedness. We have definitely seen a change in him! He was not walking before. He would stand up and hold on to things but not try to take steps on his own. Since the glasses (it has been less than a week!) He has taken steps independently so I really think you will see some improvement once Sophia gets her glasses and can see. She will have a whole new world opened up to her. My son has been mush more active as well. He is rolling around on the floor now with his big sister...he never used to do that. It is obvious he feels so much better and has more freedom now.

Good luck with everything. Please post and let us know how Sophia is doing!

Thank you TexasRose for your kind words of encouragement.

Sophia's opthamologist appointment didn't go as I'd hoped. We're going to patch for 2 more months and check her prescription again. Then we'll make a decision about glasses or surgery. I explained my concern about Sophia's delayed mobility and he said he's seen lots of babies with worse prescriptions than hers develop at the same rate as other kids. He doubts her delays are related to her vision and doesn't think glasses will help at this time. Apparently infant eyes can compensate for poor vision way better than adult eyes so its likely Sophia is getting along just fine without glasses. I guess that means Sophia's just lazy. I think she gets it from her dad ha ha ha.
