Shocked.... 2010/02/09 12:11 Karma: 0
My 1 year-old went for his well visit on Saturday, where he failed part of the vision test. We were referred to a pediatric ophthalmologist, went through the exam, and it turns out that he is extremely far-sighted, 4x more so than the average for babies his age. My husband and I are shocked, concerned and upset. He needs glasses, and we've ordered them (hopefully they'll be here before the end of the week).

We had no idea he had any kind of vision problem. We don't have any major vision issues ourselves. No one in our house wears glasses. We're very new to this...and concerned. We don't want people making fun of him, and we're also sad...the doc told us he's been struggling to see.

Any advice, suggestions anyone can provide would be appreciated.

Hi there, I had a similar situation, only knew my baby needed glasses at 5 months old. As far as feeling like your baby will be made fun of, you will soon realize that people seem to adore little babies with glasses. People are very interrested in the fact that a DR. can actually find an RX for such a little baby... And believe me, they can!
My little man used to grind his head on the floor, and move his head like something was bothering him. After he got his glasses, it just stopped, I think he was having little headaches.
Trying to keep the glasses on your baby will probablly be a struggle, but once he gets used to them he will object to removing them. Just a tip from personal experience... Try putting them on him when he is sleeping, that way you have to fight less to get them on, and seccond, try to get your baby to wear a cap, or beanie, this way they will be used to feeling something on their head. It worked wonders for my baby.
I posted a couple of months ago that his RX was going to be around a +7.50 and a +4.50, but got him tested a month ago and it is actually more like +9.50, and +7.50. My son is also extreamlly far sighted, and though he isnt wearing his full rx yet, the glasses are working wonders. He is not delayed in any way, and wears his glasses beautifully. Im sure you will see, that people really love baby glasses, and you will find a bit of comfort in knowing that your baby will be seeing better soon=)

Kids with glasses are fascinating for parents and other children. Really don't worry about them being made fun of, and try not to communicate that worry: wearing glasses daily is the most normal thing in the world for millions of people, and you can do almost anything a non-wearer can do. We're actually giving nursery some of our little girl's old specs, because the other children are so fascinated by hers, and love dressing up!

You should take the view that you've found the problem quickly and are dealing with it: anyone making fun of you or your child doesn't deserve the time of day- just ignore them.

(Our little one is about -4 in both eyes, and I watched as the optician put on her first pair of glasses - it was just unforgettable how she kind of blinked and re-focussed, and then just cracked on with life!)
