Corban's Story 2010/04/27 02:04 Karma: 0
So glad to have found this site! My son was born March 4, 2009. When he started opening his eyes well, I noticed he never would look at me unless I was right in front of his face. He also cried if he heard an unfamiliar voice. His eyes also shook and danced back and forth. I got really concerned when this was still going on at 6 months, so I finally asked the Pediatrician about it. She had been examining his eyes since birth, so I figured all was well and that I was just a paranoid first time mom. The day that I took Corban in to see her, she was out sick, so he saw the Nurse Practitioner. She took a look at his eyes and told me that he had Nystagmus and that usually this is caused by something else. So we went to see a specialist and she diagnosed him with congenital cataracts and nystagmus. He had the right lens removed the next day and then the left the following week. He doesn't have lens in his eyes because she wants to wait until he is older so he can decide. He wears contacts or glasses. We are having trouble keeping the right contact in, so he just wears his glasses now.

He has had quite a few developmental delays. He is almost 14 months and still isn't pulling up or sitting up on his own yet or standing well. He honestly has on interest in it. I get so sad because I see so many babies his age or younger walking. I just want Corban to be able to do the things other babies can do, and I know he eventually will. It doesn't keep me from worrying about him though.

Hi Corban's mama.

My daughter Sophia is also delayed. Low tone with strabismus, no diagnosis yet. At 12 months she can roll over (mainly just to get off her belly) and can sit supported. Pulling up, crawling, and walking seem so far away right now. It sucks being the odd one out at playgroup. It is isolating to have a child that's different but please know so many others are sharing your journey.

Sophia's started into the state's Early Intervention program and is receiving OT once a week and we've hired a private PT for an additional session per week. We are all impressed with how much stronger she's gotten in the few weeks we've been at it. Every day Sophia amazes us with her progress.

The sky is the limit for our kids.

Diagnosed with unilateral cataract 2010/06/26 15:04 Karma: 0
My son Matteo was born on 14/5/2010.
A week later a specialist came to see us, and told us he had a unilateral cataract, but advised to leave it alone as he would have a normal healthy life and that he would still see shapes and colours out of the right eye. He said that a replacement (iol) operataion was complicated and not that successful! Go away and do your research is what he told us to do... so we did.
I got in touch with the head of Great Ormond st hospital, who said that we needed to get to see him that week as basically we had four weeks to save the eye.
Our consultation was very good, we opted for the operation and was also told that if we left the eye he would only of ever been able to tell the difference between day and night.
The operation was carried out on 16th June, Matteo could not have a false lens fitted as the eye was too deep, but were also told that a week later glucoma would have set in the eye and more than likely my son would be blind in that eye.
We are back next week at GOSH for patching, contacts or glasses.,,, so will keep you posted.

So basically if I had not of had a second opinion god know what sort of a state my sons eye would be in right know, so any parents going through the same please just ask!

Hi I am a new mum, My name is Nerita
I am from South Africa, Johannesburg
My baby, Isaiah was born on the 29/10/2009, he is 8 months + 1 week.
Diagnosed with a heart murmur the next day and a few days later diadnosed with congenital cataract in both eyes. The doctors say I came into contact with someone who had German measles or I had it myself......yes German measle can cause the foetus to die or be like a cabbage when born. He was operated on at 3 months and then started wearing glasses, the strength of his glasses are + 17 for both eyes, the specialist says he would prefer to put articial lenses in whe baby is about 2 years old

He has also had glaucoma in the right and had to have that eye operated on in order to reduce the pressure I must say he is doing much better now........though we have to keep on watching it.

He is also a bit slow, he cant sit on his own without support and wants to stand and dosnt crawl as yet......it is hard to watch your little one go through this. but we are motivating him and he is showing that he wants to do all these things. My heart was broken when I found all these things out about, but JESUS has helped us through all the way and HE keeps on helping us.....nothing is impossible with HIM.
