Children's attitudes about kids in glasses

This is a few months old now, and really about kids in glasses, not babies.  But our babes will grow into kids soon enough.  One of my many fears when we first learned that Zoe would need glasses was that she would be stigmatized and treated differently by other children.  Turns out I needn't have been too concerned.  In a study (with the awesome name CAKE - Children's Attitudes about Kids in Eyeglasses) published in Ophthalmic and Physiologic Optics in April of this year, researchers look at how kids aged 6 - 10 view other kids in glasses.  They found that kids thought those with glasses were smarter and more honest, but there was no difference in how other kids judged their appearance, athletic abilities, or whether they would like to be playmates!

You can read an interview with one of the authors, or the abstract of the actual study, "What do kids think about kids in eyeglasses?", published in Ophthalmic and Physicolgic Optics, 2008, vol 28 (3), pg. 218 - 224.
