Children's attitudes about kids in glasses |

This is a few months old now, and really about kids in glasses, not babies. But our babes will grow into kids soon enough. One of my many fears when we first learned that Zoe would need glasses was that she would be stigmatized and treated differently by other children. Turns out I needn't have been too concerned. In a study (with the awesome name CAKE - Children's Attitudes about Kids in Eyeglasses) published in Ophthalmic and Physiologic Optics in April of this year, researchers look at how kids aged 6 - 10 view other kids in glasses. They found that kids thought those with glasses were smarter and more honest, but there was no difference in how other kids judged their appearance, athletic abilities, or whether they would like to be playmates!
You can read an interview with one of the authors, or the abstract of the actual study, "What do kids think about kids in eyeglasses?", published in Ophthalmic and Physicolgic Optics, 2008, vol 28 (3), pg. 218 - 224. |

I recently received an email from a new member inquiring
where to get frames for his 4-month-old son, as none of the shops in his area
carried infant frames. I recommended Solo Bambini to him. Solo Bambini has
their own line of children’s frames including Solo Bambini infant and toddler
frames in three sizes and Portofino
frames for kids and pre-teens. They also distribute Italian-made Como infant and toddler frames in two sizes and French-made Maudal frames for children.
I highly recommend the Como
frames, as they are the frames that both my boys wear, appear to be more
comfortable than the “hard’ frames designed for older kids, and are extremely
durable. My oldest Son, now almost 3, has had the same frames for two and a
half years. They’re still as good as new and have held at least a dozen sets of
lenses due to replacements for scratched lenses and prescription changes. I
do not think any other frames would have lasted as long given the abuse these
frames have taken.
If your local optical shop does not carry infant frames, let
them know about Solo Bambini, and they can order frames directly from Solo Bambini . If you cannot get your optical shop to do this, your doctor should be able to order a complete set of glasses directly from Solo Bambini for you. Discuss this article on the forums. (0 posts)

After discovering Cafe Press and the 3 Little Monkeys shop, I wanted to create some custom T-Shirts with more designs and bolder statements for infants and children with glasses. Being none too shabby with Photoshop, I set to work and developed several designs and started uploading them to Cafe Press. You can now visit the Babies with Glasses store
at Cafe Press and buy T-shirts for your own babies and kids with glasses! The "Shop" link on the tabbed menu will take you there as well.
